The MDI Bird Club is a membership of people who have identified at least
100 species of birds on Mount Desert Island (MDI). Members currently have
two levels of participation: those people who have identified at least 100
species of birds from MDI, and those who have identified at least 200 species.
Members will receive one of the above embroidered patches, appropriate for
their membership level, along with the MDI Bird Club Annual, the newsletter
of the MDI Bird Club.
To become a member, please follow these simple steps:
- Submit a copy of the Checklist of the Birds of Mount Desert Island,
listing the date and location of the species you have observed. All
species must have been observed on, or from, MDI. Additional written
notes — e.g., numbers of individuals observed, names of other
observers, photos, written notes, etc. — are welcomed, especially for
those species listed as rare, very rare, casual, or accidental. If the
species is not on the Checklist, further documentation and/or evidence
of your observation is required (for further details, please contact Rich
MacDonald). NOTE: The Checklist can be purchased from The
Natural History Center, or it may be downloaded for free from this
website. For details, please view the Publications & Checklists page.
- Include a check for $5.00, payable to The Natural History Center, for
each patch requested. This fee includes life membership in the MDI Bird
Club, entitles the member to one patch, and adds your name to the
Club mailing list. Club members will receive the MDI Bird Club Annual
each February. The Annual serves as a member forum and lists
member totals. The list will also be posted on the Publications &
Checklists page of The Natural History Center website. Once you are
a member, feel free to update your MDI bird tally. For those without
Internet access, or people who wish to receive the annual notice via U.
S. Mail, please add $25 to your life membership to cover processing
and mailing.
- Send your Checklist and check or money order, payable to The
Natural History Center, to:

If you are sending updates, please send these by January 15 for
inclusion in the next MDI Bird Club notice.
