Rich MacDonald, along with wife Natalie, is co-owner of
The Natural History Center.  A lifelong birder, naturalist, and
field biologist, Rich is usually found outdoors with binoculars
strapped over his shoulder. He has long studied boreal birds
and waterbirds, and led bird tours throughout North America
and beyond, as well. In recent years, Rich has served as lead
naturalist for Garrison Keillor on each of the four cruises of
National Public Radio's A Prairie Home Companion. Rich’s
bibliography started in 1991 with his first publication in
Adirondack Life; since that time he has published numerous
magazine articles on birds, ecology, and paddlesports. A
dedicated outdoor adventurer, Rich also instructs sea
kayaking, white-water kayaking, canoeing, and telemark
skiing. All of his educational programs weave local
ornithology and ecology into the course content. Not to be
outdone, Rich’s three-year-old daughter Anouk recently
spotted the Snowy Owl atop a local mountain before her
Papa…a proud moment for all.

Who we are....
Natalie Springuel, along with husband Rich, is co-owner of
The Natural History Center. She, too, served as lead
naturalist for Garrison Keillor on the cruises of National
Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. Natalie
combines her passions for the marine environment and
coastal heritage with her love of teaching and adventure to
help people discover ocean and coastal environments. As a
Master Maine Guide for sea kayaking and recreation, she has
led thousands of visitors by land and by sea. Natalie’s full-
time position is as a marine extension associate for the
University of Maine's Sea Grant College Program which
focuses on the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources
through research and education.
Natalie and Rich’s joie de vivre is particularly evident when
the lead tours together. It has been said that “Rich covers
everything above the water and Natalie everything below.”
Three-year-old daughter Anouk is their chief research
assistant and well on her way to a life of adventure. Anouk
currently has a bird life-list quickly approaching 200 species.
