Birding After Dark: Owls & Nightjars

There is something magical about walking in the woods at night. And this is the time of year when nighttime birdlife is quite active. Hear the “booming” of Common Nighthawks. Whip-poor-wills constantly sing from grassy meadows. Barred Owls call out “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?” The tiny Northern Saw-whet Owl sounds every bit like the back-up beeper of a big truck. And in recent years (including this year), a Chuck-will’s-widow has been adding its voice to the chorus. We’ll walk in up to two miles on the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands Valley Road. This gravel road is closed to automobiles and makes for easy walking. Our pace will be casual as we listen for the sounds of the night. (Headlamps required.)
