Sunset Kayak Tour

There is something magical about the low-angle sun of the late afternoon as it leads to sunset. As we paddle tandem sea kayak around Mount Desert Narrows, we can look for local fauna, especially Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Harbor Porpoise, and Moon Jellies. Maybe we’ll see the water boil as poagies, a herring-like fish, have a feeding frenzy. Additionally, we’ll see two different mussel farms, an oyster farm, and an array of colorful lobster trap buoys.

Birding After Dark: Owls & Nightjars

There is something magical about walking in the woods at night. Hear the “booming” of Common Nighthawks. Whip-poor-wills constantly sing from grassy meadows. Barred Owls call out “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?” And in recent years (including this year), a Chuck-will’s-widow has been adding its voice to the chorus. We’ll walk in up to two miles on the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands Valley Road. This gravel road is closed to automobiles and makes for easy walking. Our pace will be casual as we listen for the sounds of the night. (Headlamps required.)

MDI Birdathon!

MDI Birdathon!

Every year, the Downeast Chapter of Maine Audubon hosts a Hancock County (Maine) birdathon. Multiple teams take to the field to look for as many species of birds as possible, all to raise funds to send local youths to summer camp. The Natural History Center leads a team that focuses on Mount Desert Island. Each year, we find right around 100 species. If you would like to contribute, please send a check, payable to “Downeast Audubon,” c/o The Natural History Center, P.O. Box 6, Bar Harbor, ME 04609. And if you want to follow us on our big day, tune in to our Facebook or Instagram accounts.

17 May Weekly Birding Tour to Schoodic

Join us for our 17 May birding tour to the Schoodic Peninsula. Any time of year is good for visiting Schoodic. This is one of the best sea-watches in Maine. Of course, there’s always a chance for boreal specialties such as Spruce Grouse. And we might find lingering Purple Sandpiper and Harlequin Duck. We’ll make a slightly longer day of it, exploring a few points outside of the Schoodic Section of Acadia, too.

MDI Science Café — Migration, Climate Change, and Zero-Carbon Birding

Join our own Rich MacDonald as he discusses birds and climate change. Coming out of an intensive year of birding, Rich wrote a book (Little Big Year: Chasing Acadia’s Birds), a fun read about birds and birding. But he was disturbed by how many miles he actually drove just to go birding. This has led to a more deliberate effort to mitigate his own carbon footprint while birding. Rich’s discussion will weave a narrative of birds and our changing climate.
